Ameen to Alarm

June 7, 2010

I set off the smoke detector in my apartment (again!). That was the fourth time in a row within a month. The first time it happened, I freaked out and cried “No! No! No!” repeatedly and jumped madly on and on like a just-slaughtered chicken. The second time, I was traumatized beyond words. The third time, I was numb with disbelief. And the last time it happened a few hours ago, I fucked myself over and over again. But I was lucky that, after all these unlucky events, the smoke detector did not set off the fire evacuation alarm that would summon the Fire Brigade and force all residents to evacuate the building and gather unnecessarily in the assembly area and curse me for the false alarm (plus the potential penalty of $900 for the false call-out fee!). I know, I should be more extremely extremely extremely careful. Just remember two simple rules. Turn on the smoke ventilation system while cooking. And let the sliding door open to ease the smoky air. May God prevent the fifth alarm. Ameen.
